INFRASTRUCTURE SECTOR PROFILE

The existing road networks of Irosin provide access to all its rural barangays from the urban center except for Cawayan, a mountain village. The Maharlika Highway is a main road artery linking the municipality to other places in the Philippines. The national road has a length of 22.155 kilometers stretching from Bolos in the north to Casini in the south and from town center to Mapaso in the east. The provincial road in the municipality has a total length of 5.945 kilometers. The existing roads within the poblacion are municipal roads with a total length of 7.927 kilometers. The roads classified as barangay roads have a total length of 64.403 kilometers. The total length of the road network in the municipality is 100.43 kilometers. The length of roads with asphalt overlay is 22.21 kilometers, concrete roads is 70.31 kilometers and unpaved roads is 7.91 kilometers.

 

There are 15 bridges and majority are along national road. Eleven bridges are permanent concrete bridges and four are spillways reinforced by culverts. The mode of transportation for inter-barangay mobility are mainly tricycles, jeepneys and trucks except for Cawayan. Tricycles are the most common mode of public transportation in the town proper. Land transportation facilities in the municipality include a public transport terminal and five gas refilling stations.

 

There are five automated teller machines (ATMs) in the municipality. Electricity is distributed to all 28 barangays by Sorsogon Electric Cooperative I (SORECO I). Access to ICT is provided by Sun Cellular, Smart and Globe through their cellular networks with 15 cell sites in the locality. High speed internet fiber optic internet connectivity is available through PLDT and Converge. Irosin has one FM Radio Station the Radyo Natin-FM Station of the Manila Broadcasting Corporation. A Cable-TV operated by EFG-CATV provides cable connections to household subscribers. Several private two-way radio communication networks are available as well as government radio network for local emergency response and protective services.

 

The main municipal administrative buildings are located at San Julian with Irosin Precidencia with annex offices for executive department, legislative department, social services offices, disaster operations center and senior citizens center. An Irosin National Agencies Center and Terminal complex houses buildings of BJMP district jail, municipal and regional trial courts, PNP station, multipurpose evacuation center, water district, transport terminal, and various government offices.  Parks, playgrounds and covered courts in the municipality includes:

  • Rizal Park. Located at the municipal compound is a 500 sq. m. park with a Rizal monument as its centerpiece.
  • Eco-Zoo Park. A 1.2 hectare park in Patag beside a closed dumpsite and solid waste processing facility that features children’s playground, a wildlife rescue center, garden, plant nursery, tree houses, grotto and multi-purpose buildings.
  • Valley View Park. At Salvacion is a 1,780 sq. m. park offering a view of Irosin valley and Bulusan Volcano with concrete cottages and view decks.
  • Irosin Lake. The Irosin Lake covers an area of 46,325 square meters in Patag. The lake offers kayaking, boating and zip line activities and features amenities that include cycling/jogging lane, cottages, a function halls and an administration building.
  • Covered Courts. There are 16 covered courts in various barangays that are used for recreational, sports and socio-civic activities, including the main public auditorium in San Julian.

The identified issues and concerns for the infrastructure sector are:

  • Old and congested municipal administrative building
  • Many barangays with no or limited barangay-owned lots for barangay facilities
  • Presence of informal settlers in private and public lands
  • 726 households with Level I water system
  • Lack of water system in Salvacion Resettlement Site
  • Poor water pressure in some IWD coverage area
  • Lack of public parks and playgrounds
  • Lack of urban roads
  • Lack of roads in rural areas and production areas
  • No transport terminal for bus and PUVs, open parking for tricycles
  • Congested civil and Catholic cemeteries
  • Poor state of Irosin Presidencia historical building
  • Barangays without multi-purpose civic centers
